PE competitions and results
Unfortunately due to the situation and restrictions over the last year, we have been unable to take part in competitive sport both within school and against other schools. However this is changing! More information and results to follow shortly (we hope).
But during this strange time, we have continued with our in-house Sports Day, albeit in bubbles, and in virtual events against other schools. Information on these are below:
July 2021 - Birchwood Grove's Sports Day (run slightly differently to the traditional format this year)....
Within class bubbles, children from across the school competed in 5 different events that focussed on running, jumping and throwing. They represented their colour teams, as in previous years, and gained points that went towards their teams final totals. Once all was added up, results were announced in the 'virtual' end of year assembly. Congratulations to the Red team, pipping the Green team into 1st place by just 12 points. The final standings were:
1st place = Red team 1360 points
2nd place = Green team 1348 points
3rd place = Blue team 1281 points
4th place = Yellow team 1231 points
Thank you to everyone who took part with such enthusiasm in the events, and we hope to return to the traditional sports day format next year!
July 2020 - Birchwood Grove's first ever 'virtual' sports week (replacing the traditional annual sports day)....
Children both in school and at home competed across the 5 different events, submitting their scores online. An incredibly close competition resulted in the Yellow Team emerging victorious! Thank you to everyone for your participation and enthusiasm.... Hopefully next year we can compete together as normal.
February 2021 - The Sussex School Games: The 'Virtual' Winter Games....
Thank you very much to everyone that took part in the 'Virtual' Sussex School Winter Games - The final results are now in!
Following 4 weeks of challenges throughout February, Birchwood Grove finished in joint 29th position, out of nearly 300 schools across both West and East Sussex.... What a fantastic effort! Our adults finished in joint 27th position, out of 150 schools that took part in that category, and as a school we helped the Mid Sussex Panthers (our 'group' of schools that we represent) finish in 2nd place, out of 9 'groups' of schools.
Thank you again to all who took part throughout these difficult times, keeping active and keeping smiling. Below are our positions for all 4 weeks of challenges:
- Week 1 - 'Snow Sports'
Birchwood Grove finished 60th out of 237 schools
- Week 2 - 'Bob Run Sports'
Birchwood Grove finished 27th out of 242 schools
- Week 3 - 'Ice Rink Sports'
Birchwood Grove finished 38th out of 138 schools
- Week 4 - 'Team Ice Sports'
Birchwood Grove finished 60th out of 220 schools
November 2020 - Mid Sussex Active 'Virtual' Cross Country Event....
As part of the Mid Sussex Active 'VIRTUAL' School Games programme this Autumn Term, Birchwood Grove have taken part in the Cross Country event. Children from Years 3 and 4 ran a 1km course on the school field, whilst children from Years 5 and 6 ran a 1.5 km course. This was optional, and took place at lunchtime, so that no 'bubble crossing' took place. It also took place in the pouring rain! The times for all children ran were recorded, with the top 10 times across Years 3 and 4 and then the top 10 times across Years 5 and 6 being submitted to Mid Sussex Active.
Medals were awarded to the top 3 boys and top 3 girls across Years 3 and 4, and Years 5 and 6. Their times were as follows:
Years 3 and 4 (over a 1km course):
1) Jack = 4:34 2) Connor = 4:41 3) Ben = 4:49
1) Isla = 4:51 2) Lara = 5:07 3) Leonie = 5:18
Years 5 and 6 (over a 1.5km course):
1) Olly = 6:46 2) Felix = 6:50 3) Ben = 6:53
1) Suzie = 7:23 2) Imogen = 8:14 3) Eve = 8:14
Our top 10 times were then matched up against other schools top 10 times in the area, and the results were announced...... The Year 3 and 4's finished a very respectable 7th out of 11 schools, with St Mark's Primary School victorious in this category. The Year 5 and 6's finished again a very respectable 8th out of 14 schools, with Warden Park Primary Academy victorious in this category.
Thank you to everyone that took part in this event here at Birchwood Grove, with such enthusiasm and smiles on their faces.
Below are various results, photos, and information from some of the many competitions and friendly matches that Birchwood Grove have taken part in over the last few years:
Monday 21 November 2021 - Boys Football Friendly vs. Manor Field
Team 1 consisted of Year 6s and Year 5s, with Alex T in goal, Ethan W and Freddie L defending, Isaac G, Jack S and Felix were midfield and Freddy C was striking. At half time they switched around, all of them showed amazing sportsmanship and excellent play, shaking hands with the Manor Field players (opposition) after the match. The score was 4-3 to Birchwood Grove. There were lots of practise for the amazing substitutions. This was a nerve-racking match with a close finish, Birchwood Grove scoring the winning goal just in time. Thanks to Felix, Freddy C, Jack S and Isaac G for scoring one amazing goal each. Extra credit to Freddie L for that incredible goal. This really was a whole team effort.
Team 2 consisted of Year 6s and Year 5s with James/Teddy at goal (switched at half time), Ritaansh and Jaisurya defending, Teddy and Elliot in midfield, Alfie and Emile were midfield too, James (switched at half time), Freddie F striking. They played really well, and showed excellent sportsmanship. Everyone switching around positions at half-time. Sadly, we lost 3-2 to Manor Field due to a last minute goal, but it was really close. Teddy did brilliantly in goal, saving lots of shots. Congratulations to Alfie and Emile for scoring one goal each. This was truly a whole team effort.
This was extremely close guys, well done to both awesome teams!

Well done to the A Team who won their group, winning 4 out of 5 games and drawing one. They scored 10 goals and conceded none! Unfortunately, the team lost in the quarterfinals to Harlands, 2-1. The B Team played very well, however they lost 3 games and drew 2!
February 2019 - Basketball A Team Competition....
A huge well done to our Basketball A Team who came 2nd in their group and 5th overall in a tournament of 15 teams.
February 2019 - Indoor Cricket Tournament....
The boys played incredibly well and improved on our scores from last year. Out of two matches, they won one match and unfortunately lost the other.
